Hot drinks and light snacks will be provided.Link to register: Fall Walk at Quarry HillThursday, October 5 @ 5:00-6:30 PM Quarry Hill Nature Center701 Silver Creek Rd NE, Rochester, MNThis outing is great for new folks who want to get outside, get involved, or plan and lead future outings in the Rochester area and SE Minnesota! We're excited to begin hosting outings in the Rochester area, and we need people power to make them a success. We'll meet just outside the Quarry Hill Nature Center. In the heart of the city, Rochester's Quarry Hill Park features 8+ miles of paved and hiking trails, a pond, and a historic sandstone cave. 450 million years ago, the park was covered by an ocean and fossils remain in the Platteville limestone found in the park today. Commonly found fossils include: brachiopods, trilobites, cephalopods and gastropods. Fossil hunting is a treasured tradition in the park. The walk will be a little under 2 miles and less than an hour, and folks are welcome to keep hiking as they see fit. The hike will be moderate, with mostly unpaved, grassy trails with some areas a little rocky with some hills. Elevation gain of 173 ft. Pace will be about 2.5-3 mph.The trail we will be on was reclaimed as an oak savanna and seeded with native prairie plants. There's a bench at the top of the hill with views of downtown Rochester. Quarry Hill Nature Center houses an exhibit with live animals and admission is free!Hope you can join us! ... See MoreSee Less
